Step 1: Act Fast!

If you are able to take action immediately, grab a white cloth and lightly blot up the excess liquid. Pour a bit of cold water directly on the stain to dilute the remaining liquid. Use a clean cloth and blot again. Repeat this process until the cloth doesn’t change color anymore.

Step 2: Make Your Own Stain-Remover

Solution A: Baking soda. Make a paste of three-parts-water with one-part baking soda. Apply it to the stained area, let it dry, and then vacuum it up. Repeat as necessary.

Solution B: Vinegar. Mix two cups of water, one tablespoon of vinegar, and one tablespoon of dish soap in a bowl. Use a sponge to apply the solution directly on the stain, and blot it dry. Repeat as necessary.

Like any set-in stain, coffee can be tough to clean up after days, weeks, or months after a spill. That is especially true if the coffee stain is in the middle of a high-traffic area because every step can grind the stain deeper in.

When you’re dealing with a set-in stain, start with a little bit of warm water to loosen the dried coffee. Using your white cloth, work the stain inward so you don’t risk extending the stain to other fibers. Use the Solution B (vinegar) stain-remover to work the coffee stain out.
