Dangerous Cleaner Combinations
What You Shouldn’t Mix
A quick search will give you plenty of cleaning hacks to handle messes with supplies you already have at home. When you have a tricky stain or cleanup project, it can be tempting to get creative with the chemicals you already use to make the perfect product. However, you need to be careful because products that are harmless alone can be devastating when combined. Don’t mess around with these dangerous cleaner combinations!
Dangerous Cleaner Combinations
- Ammonia and Bleach: When combined, a toxic gas called chloramine is produced that is toxic to people and animals.
- Bleach and Vinegar: This creates a toxic chlorine gas that is extremely dangerous to human health.
- Hydrogen Peroxide and Vinegar: When mixed together in the same container, peracetic acid is produced, which can irritate skin, eyes, and the respiratory system.
- Bleach and Rubbing Alcohol: This mixture can create chloroform, which is capable of damaging your liver, kidney, brain, heart, and bone marrow.
- Two Different Drain Cleaners: Don’t get creative when trying to take care of a drain clog by mixing products that are bases, bleach-based, or acids. There are many reactions that may occur, including the production of scalding hot water and chlorine gas.
- Bleach and Toilet Bowl Cleaner: When bleach is mixed with some toilet bowl cleaners that contain acid, chlorine gas can be produced.
Note: This is not an exhaustive list, and you should always complete adequate research before mixing chemicals.Â
