9 Tips for Cleaning Bathroom Mold and Mildew

Even in the Summer Heat

Summer’s heat and humidity creates the ideal conditions for mold and mildew growth, especially in moist environments—like the bathroom. Keeping these areas clean takes a little more attention this time of year. Here are some tips for cleaning bathroom mold and mildew and preventing it in the first place.

Keeping Bathrooms Clean in the Summer

Between steam showers and wet linens, bathrooms naturally accumulate moisture. This is one of the reasons why mold and mildew can typically be found around sinks, tubs, toilets, and tile grout. While properly drying out the space can help slow down mold and mildew growth, it can prove to be more difficult during summer’s hot and humid weather. But there are several ways to expediate the process.

  1. Run the exhaust fan properly. The right fan is a bathroom essential. Running it the right way increases its efficiency. Exhaust fans extract moisture from the air and vent it outside. While there are many types of bathroom units, the most effective ones depend on the size of the space. Each fan lists what size room it works best in. Ideally you want to run the vent during your shower or bath and leave it on for at least 30 minutes after to help vent leftover moisture. Some fans have a timer function to help make this easier.
  2. Try a cold shower. Hot showers increase the humidity level in your bathroom. Since it’s summer, try a cooler shower instead. Not only will it be more refreshing, it will help reduce the dampness in the room.
  3. Use a squeegee. While it may seem like an added chore, it does a lot to help reduce moisture. Run it across your tub, shower walls, door, and anywhere else you see water dripping inside your bathroom.
  4. Fix any leaks. Not only does this help repair any potential problems around your bathroom, it also prevents moisture accumulation and mold growth.
  5. Wash linens regularly. From the towels and bath mat to the shower curtain and liner, these items are made to collect moisture and dry quickly. However, if left unwashed for too long—especially in the summer—mold can start to grow and these items will start to smell.
  6. Dry shower items. Any product bottle, loofah, or other bath item left in the shower can collect water and create a breeding ground for mildew. Remove these items from the shower and dry them off to help prevent mold growth.
  7. Run the dehumidifier. Consider running a dehumidifier in the bathroom to help control moisture levels. Using an air conditioner will also help dry the room out.
  8. Improve air circulation. After your shower, keep the curtain, door, and window open to help circulate air and diminish condensation. Allowing natural light to filter in also helps repel mold and mildew.
  9. Reseal your grout. Over time, tile grout can crack if not sealed correctly. When moisture seeps into these areas, it’s the perfect place for mold and mildew to grow. Help maintain your grout and limit mold by resealing your grout from time to time.

By staying consistent in your cleaning and limiting the moisture buildup in your bathroom, you’ll help prevent excess mold and mildew growth. Since the summer is a tougher season to tackle humidity-related issues, there’s one company you can call for backup.
