The Vacation Rental Cleaning Checklist

To Help Rake in Reviews and Returning Guests

When you go away on vacation, the last thing you want to worry about is dirty accommodations. As a renter, the last thing you want is a bad review and a dwindling list of renters. So here’s a vacation rental cleaning checklist to help get your rental home or unit into top shape for those five-star reviews.

Vacation Rental Cleaning Checklist

From sanitizing and deodorizing to making the place comfortable and inviting, there’s a lot that goes into cleaning a vacation rental. We’re here to help make it easier. In addition to the normal dusting, vacuuming, and wiping down surfaces, this quick checklist focuses on sprucing up certain spots in each room.

Living Room

This area may be the first thing guests see as they walk through the door. It’s also a space they’re likely to gather as a family and spend the most time. Make it cozy!

  • Check under the couch cushions and furniture.
  • Straighten any books, magazines, and games in an accessible area.
  • Freshen the space with seasonal decor and plenty of pillows and blankets.

Kitchen

Even though it’s vacation, some guests may still prepare meals in your kitchen, or at least heat up takeout. Make it shine!

  • Clean appliances inside and out.
  • Make sure the garbage disposal, if available, is in working order.
  • Drop some fresheners in the trash can.
  • Clean inside the refrigerator and freezer.
  • Keep some essentials on the spotless counter, such as a new sponge, nonperishable condiments, spices, and a welcome snack.

Dining Area

Some of the best memories are made around the dining table. Help make these meals more magical.

  • Arrange a festive table setting.
  • Refresh any centerpieces or decor.
  • If the table includes an added leaf, consider putting it in first or make it easy to find and assemble.

Bathrooms

Guests are particularly sensitive to the cleanliness of these more private areas. Give them a spa-like experience that goes above and beyond a germ-free gleam.

  • Lay out towels and toiletries.
  • Refill air fresheners.
  • Add fresh or faux flowers or other simple decor.

Bedrooms

Create a restful retreat by decluttering this space and keeping it crisp and clean.

  • Freshen linens on all beds.
  • Neatly arrange pillows and bed coverings.
  • Don’t forget to dust or launder the window coverings.

Laundry Room

Allowing guests access to the laundry room adds one more creature comfort.

  • Empty the dryer’s lint trap.
  • Refill detergent, stain treatment, and dryer sheets.
  • Clean and organize laundry supplies on shelves or cabinets.

Outdoor Space

An outdoor oasis is an extension of the vacation experience.

  • Inspect outdoor furniture for any damage.
  • Maintain grills and the associated equipment.
  • Clean and treat the water in pools and hot tubs as needed.
  • Maintain garden areas and pathways, removing any hazards, weeds, or dead plants.

Rental Garage Cleaning

Often overlooked, this area should also stay decluttered in case guests want to use it for their vehicle or equipment storage.

  • Organize any available tools, sports equipment, and other items.
  • Remove cobwebs from corners and ceilings.
  • Ensure the garage door functions smoothly.
