How to Clean a Mattress Properly
Before Guests Start to Arrive
It’s that time of year again! If you’re getting ready to welcome holiday guests, there’s a lot to take care of in a short amount of time. But there’s also help available! For now, let’s focus on the guest room. While the mattress in there may not always be used, it should still be regularly cleaned. Learn why properly cleaning a mattress can help transform your guest room into a welcoming retreat.
Reasons to Clean a Mattress
Sure, the mattress may be protected by a special cover and a set of sheets, but there are benefits to removing those shields and cleaning the mattress directly on a regular basis.
- Remove allergens. Dust, hair, dead skin, and other debris can build up in the fibers of the mattress and trigger allergy symptoms.
- Freshen the air. A mattress can absorb odors and oils that linger overtime and permeate in the air. Steam cleaning a mattress helps lift bacteria and dissipate unsanitary smells.
- Improve quality. Extend the life of your mattress by keeping it clean. Prevent the accumulation of dirt, oils, and stains that can add to the wear and tear of the fabric.
Think about the people sleeping on the mattress. Whether it’s you or a guest, would you want to lie down on something that could be littered with dead skin and an unpleasant scent? Do yourself and your visitors a favor. Clean the mattress. Use their impending arrival as a reminder that it’s time to do some deep cleaning.
Cleaning a Mattress Properly
Yes, changing the sheets regularly is an important part of keeping your mattress clean. But a deep cleaning approximately every six months will help. Here are the basics:
- Remove all the bedding, including any mattress protector. Wash everything following the tag instructions.
- Vacuum the mattress to remove dust, hair, dead skin, and other debris on the surface and between the quilted grooves. Don’t put the vacuum away yet, you’ll need it again soon.
- Spot clean stains as soon as possible to prevent damage.
- Deodorize by sprinkling baking soda on the mattress surface. Let it sit for a few hours to absorb moisture and neutralize odors. Then vacuum it up. Okay, now you can give the vacuum a break.
- Don’t be in a rush to put sheets back on. Open the window and let the mattress air out in the sunshine.
- For added protection, flip and rotate your mattress. This also helps preserve quality. Once it’s flipped, repeat steps 2-5 on this side.
After your mattress has been deep cleaned and aired out, You can start dressing it again. If you haven’t already, invest in a waterproof mattress protector to help prevent moisture from soaking in. Consider keeping pets off the bed to minimize the risk of dirt and stains. Also, keeping your bedroom cool makes the area less hospitable to mold growth.
