Why Different Floors Need Different Cleaners

How to Treat Your Flooring Right

Nowadays it’s hard to find wall-to-wall carpeting. Many homes and offices feature different types of flooring throughout. This may make the design and layout more pleasing, but it could make cleaning more difficult. Why? Different floor types need different cleaners. Learn how to properly clean your floors no matter what they’re made of.

Different Floor Cleaners

From hardwood and laminate to stone and tile, there are a wide range of flooring options. Some types do better in certain rooms. For instance, tile is best in bathrooms and kitchens where moisture can build up and damage wood floors. Hardwoods and carpet are more popular throughout the living room, dining room, and bedrooms for a classic style. Laminate is often found in basements because of its durability. But each type of flooring has its own unique method of cleaning. Here are some tips to keep in mind:

  • Hardwood. Use a pH-neutral cleaner and microfiber mop to gently clean without scratching. Avoid using too much water or acidic solutions.
  • Vinyl. A microfiber mop with a small amount of moisture does the trick without warping.
  • Linoleum. This more durable flooring only needs soap, water, and any type of mop.
  • Tile. Easily sweep away dust and debris to prevent buildup. Keep the grout clean for a more pristine look.
  • Stone. Unsealed stone tiles can take hot water, but softer stone, like marble, is more delicate.
  • Laminate. Avoid harsh, scratchy treatment, like steel wool, wax, polish, or oil-based cleaners.

In addition to different cleaning products, there are also different cleaning methods. Have you ever tried mopping a carpet? Even vacuums have different settings for rugs and hard floors. Each type of flooring has different levels of porosity, abrasion resistance, and roughness. Using the wrong cleaner and method is not only less effective, but it has the potential of damaging the floor or the cleaner itself.
