Caring for Engineered Wood Floors
What to do and Not to do
If you want the look of solid wood but not all the maintenance, an engineered wood floor is a wonderful option for your home or office. Even with all its benefits, it still requires basic care to keep it in beautiful shape. Learn what to do, and what not to do, when it comes to cleaning engineered wood floors.
What is Engineered Hardwood?
Wood flooring is a popular option for those wanting a more natural look and classic design in their space. However, solid wood material is known to absorb moisture, making it prone to warping and gaping, especially in humid rooms like the bathroom and kitchen.
Engineered wood is designed in layers to prevent swelling. The top is often hardwood—so you get the look you want—and the base is usually a softwood. The layers are bonded so that the wood can’t shrink. But since the material is still wood-based, it’s still important to clean it properly and use caution when exposing it to moisture.
Cleaning Engineered Wood Floors
Like any floor, regular maintenance helps preserve the look and cleanliness of the space. Any hard floor is prone to scratches, so take extra care to choose the right cleaning products to limit damage. Here are some tips when it comes to cleaning engineered wood:
- Wipe spills immediately. Not only does this keep the area clean, but it prevents stains from setting in.
- Sweeping. Use a soft broom or microfiber cloth to collect dirt, dust, and hair.
- Damp mopping. You still don’t want to soak the floor with a wet mop. It’s best to use a damp cloth to remove set-in dirt or spills. You can also dry the floor if it still looks wet after mopping.
- Deep cleaning. Steam can do more harm than good to any type of wood floor. There are wood-safe disinfecting cleaners better suited to keep your floors and family safe.
- Polishing. Engineered hardwood can still be polished to bring it back to life. A little goes a long way and helps prevent making the floors too slippery.
- Protecting. Use rugs or runners in high traffic areas to help prevent excess dirt and scratches.
Before you purchase any new products to clean your floor, make sure it notes if it can be used on hardwood. Harsh chemical cleaners can do more harm than good. Test a small area to see how the product reacts with your specific flooring.
