Keeping Laminate Floors Clean
They May be Durable, But They Still Get Dirty
Laminate has become a popular flooring option for its classic wood look and low-maintenance durability. But like any flooring, it still requires regular, proper care. Learn about the unique methods for cleaning laminate floors and how to keep it looking its best.
What is Laminate?
Since laminate is different than other types of flooring, it has different care requirements. Laminate flooring is comprised of three layers:
- Core: supports the weight from foot traffic and furniture. Some flooring is made from high-density fiberboard (HDF), medium-density fiberboard (MDF), or cardboard.
- Decor: the top layer is a paper printed with a realistic wood look.
- Wear: a protective scratch-resistant coating is added to the top and pressed with a textured plate for a realistic woodgrain feel.
Laminate also comes with an abrasion criteria (AC) rating that ranges from AC1 (good for light foot traffic) to AC5 (best for commercial use). But like any hard flooring material, it’s still prone to scratches and collecting dirt. Unlike hardwood, the laminated surface can’t be refinished if damaged. So to help avoid replacement, it’s important to treat the floor with care and maintain it properly.
Cleaning Laminate Floors
Regular cleaning helps extend the life of your floor and keeps it looking fresh. It’s best to sweep or vacuum hard floors like laminate and occasionally mop with a damp clot. Here are some tips on how to keep it clean.
- Consult the manufacturer’s instructions for your specific floor type, especially if it’s under warranty.
- Any cleaning products you use should be approved for laminate floors. Otherwise, some formulas leave behind streaks and residue.
- Clean spills immediately by gently blotting the surface.
- Sweep everyday debris with a soft cloth to prevent scratches.
- Mop every few months with a damp cloth. Too much water can seep through the top layer and leave a stain.
- Skip steam, wax, and polishes for cleaning and revitalizing.
- Use mats, rugs, and pads under furniture legs to prevent scratching.
By removing everyday dirt, you’ll limit the need for mopping and excess moisture that could damage your floor. Decorative rugs also add a protective design element to the space.
